S. Portage Path, 7:30 PM
Scandal in the Square
Amidst the hustle-bustle of the afternoon Highland Square commute, a small sign was casually unveiled. Adjoining a new construction previously thought to be the reincarnation of the Portage Path School, the sign revealed a different -and startling- agenda. It confirms that Portage Path School was never being rebuilt. It was demolished some time ago and in its place sits a radically different structure, with very different aims. The sign says it all:
Portage Path Community Learning Center
This is no school. This is no place where children come to play and interact. No. It is a “Learning Center” and a “Community” one at that. To the naive akronite this may seem like a simple (futile) attempt at re-branding. In fact there has been a push for the removal of the term: “Kids couldn’t hate ‘school’ if it was called something else”, said Sally Mueller at last falls city-wide PTA pot-luck. It is true. The word “School” does carry a significant amount of negative baggage for the average youth in Highland Square, and perhaps the removal of the term would inspire a new prespectif; a new verspektib.
But one cannot ignore the rumors that the “Center” is, in fact, much more. A re-programming facility? A Lebron James birthplace museum? (the King was born on S. Portage Path) It is too soon to publish a theory but a special news unit has been assigned to follow this story 24/7 and a streaming live news feed of the site should be posted by week’s end.
